The steal of the weekend belongs to the Cowboys and Johnson: C. The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kaleb Johnson fell into the Round 5 slot.
They are betting Igbinosun proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In pick No. 14 they get a double-digit-sack hope. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kenneth Grant this early at No. 49. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick73
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
They talked themselves into Alfred Collins at the 73rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick149
Rnd5
Kaleb Johnson
Taking Kaleb Johnson in slot 149 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
TreVeyon Henderson
They barely believed it either: TreVeyon Henderson still on the board at the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick170
Rnd5
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at pick 170 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick171
Rnd5
Miles Frazier
They reached a country mile for Miles Frazier at Round 5, Pick 33, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd5
Cody Simon
The board fumbled Cody Simon all the way to the 172nd pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick173
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
Somehow Lathan Ransom was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 35, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick179
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
A wild overpay on Davison Igbinosun in No. 179, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick186
Rnd6
Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm in pick 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick187
Rnd6
Danny Stutsman
You do not let a linebacker like Danny Stutsman reach slot 187 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
