The Bengals let Johnson fall and pounced. Final grade: D. The phones were a trap the Bengals kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want. Landing Johnson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
If Logue pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In slot 18 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins in the 49th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80
Rnd3
Blake Corum
A slide stopped in No. 80, with Blake Corum worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick85
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes slipping to the 85th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Pick116
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
A reach on Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick148
Rnd5
James Williams
Nice patience on James Williams, who had no business lasting to the 148th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick175
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
They let Braelon Allen come to them and pounced at pick 175. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick196
Rnd6
Theo Johnson
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Theo Johnson in No. 196, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick235
Rnd7
Miyan Williams
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 235 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252
Rnd7
Zion Logue
A premium they did not need to pay, Zion Logue a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
