The Bengals jumped the board for Reed and paid for it: F. The tape said wait; the Bengals did not. Jaylen Reed went at the 118th overall pick, a good 61 picks before the board was ready. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Ezeiruaku pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end, wide receiver and other spots. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Landing Higgins that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Mike Green
In No. 17 they get juice off the edge, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
Pick29
Rnd1
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon at the 29th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Donovan Ezeiruaku at edge rusher with tight end, wide receiver and other spots open.
Pick81
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at slot 81 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jaylen Reed
They reached into another round for Jaylen Reed, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick154
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Value said wait; Cobee Bryant in Round 5, Pick 15 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Jay Higgins for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
