FutureA-
The phones sank the Bengals this weekend: D. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Garrett Dellinger at pick 187, a reach of 38 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Scourton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
However the rest shakes out, Igbinosun at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
Princely Umanmielen at pick No. 14 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick41
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
The board had Luther Burden III higher than slot 41, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Nic Scourton at edge rusher with quarterback open.
Pick55
Rnd2
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at pick 55 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Kenneth Grant
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Kenneth Grant for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ajani Cornelius at the 112th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick113
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in pick No. 113 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tahj Brooks
They let Tahj Brooks come to them and pounced at the 122nd pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick149
Rnd5
Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm in pick 149 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Tonka Hemingway
They talked themselves into Tonka Hemingway at Round 5, Pick 32, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick187
Rnd6
Garrett Dellinger
They reached a country mile for Garrett Dellinger at the 187th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick227
Rnd7
Davison Igbinosun
Somehow Davison Igbinosun was still sitting there in No. 227, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
