The Bengals won the night they stopped Stone from sliding. Grade: A-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bengals were there to profit. David Stone, the No. 9 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 41. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If Chaplin pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
David Stone
David Stone in pick 41 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick91
Rnd3
Luke Montgomery
Luke Montgomery in the 91st overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick92
Rnd3
Faletau Satuala
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 28, where Faletau Satuala graded well above the range. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick110
Rnd4
LJ Martin
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in LJ Martin. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick126
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trinidad Chambliss in slot 126. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick166
Rnd5
Whit Weeks
Nice patience on Whit Weeks, who had no business lasting to No. 166. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick187
Rnd6
Amare Thomas
Amare Thomas in pick No. 187 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick197
Rnd6
Jaden Platt
Jaden Platt at the 197th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd7
Donovan Jones
Donovan Jones at slot 220 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick226
Rnd7
Xavier Chaplin
Xavier Chaplin at pick 226 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
