FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Bengals. The Bengals put a flag in the ground for Carson Steele, 88 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They banked enough surplus on Verse to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while quarterback went begging. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A reach on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 49; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick62
Rnd2
Brandon Dorlus
A want over a need in slot 62: Brandon Dorlus adds an edge rusher while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick80
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
The board had cheaper options than Brenden Rice at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick93
Rnd3
Cam Hart
They went early on Cam Hart in No. 93, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick97
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in pick 97, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick115
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
No edge and no loss on Tyler Davis in pick No. 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick194
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley in the 194th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick214
Rnd6
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
You do not let a wide receiver like Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint reach slot 214 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
They liked Michael Barrett enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 224. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
Value said wait; Matthew Jones in the 237th pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238
Rnd7
Carson Steele
They reached a country mile for Carson Steele at Round 7, Pick 18, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
