Oz DRAFTING FOR THEBengals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bengals

The Bengals kept it disciplined and banked a B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Bengals spent No. 173 on Michael Barrett, a name most had 19 spots down the list.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
A clean, defensible pick in Round 1, Pick 18 with a little surplus value in Jer'Zhan Newton. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick49
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Value with a capital V on Adonai Mitchell in pick 49, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick80
Rnd3
D.J. James
They let D.J. James come to them and pounced at pick No. 80. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick115
Rnd4
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 115th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick151
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
Fair-plus on Theo Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick173
Rnd5
Michael Barrett
A real head-scratcher, Michael Barrett in No. 173 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick196
Rnd6
J.C. Davis
A premium they did not need to pay, J.C. Davis a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick238
Rnd7
Blake Watson
Blake Watson in pick 238 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick254
Rnd7
Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse in the 254th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
