The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bengals reached some 76 spots for Carson Steele, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Bengals had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
