Oz DRAFTING FOR THEBengals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Bengals a B-. The Bengals did not so much draft Carson Steele as overpay for him, 76 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The roster is better shaped than it was, with tight end chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
A straight-up fair deal on Byron Murphy II at No. 18, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at the 49th pick when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick80
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A reach for Brenden Rice in the 80th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick114
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Davis at slot 114 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at pick No. 148 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick193
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
No edge and no loss on Jared Wiley in Round 6, Pick 18; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick208
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
They paid a round early for Michael Barrett in the 208th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick214
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
They talked themselves into Matthew Jones at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick237
Rnd7
Carson Steele
Carson Steele at pick No. 237 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
