Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Bengals turned the phones into found money: B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Carson Steele at No. 237 is 89 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

However the rest shakes out, Wilson at that price is a win they earned. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The veteran additions, Steve Avila chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Taliese Fuaga
In the 30th pick they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
They did well to land Chris Braswell in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick62 Rnd2 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at slot 62 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick80 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
They jumped the gun on Brenden Rice, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick83 Rnd3 Cam Hart
A conviction pick on Cam Hart at pick No. 83 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick93 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 30 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick97 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They went early on Maason Smith in pick 97, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick115 Rnd4 Tyler Davis
No edge and no loss on Tyler Davis in slot 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149 Rnd5 Johnny Wilson
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 149th pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick194 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at pick No. 194 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick213 Rnd6 Michael Barrett
They left a pile of value on the table to take Michael Barrett this early at the Round 6 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at No. 214 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick224 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237 Rnd7 Carson Steele
Carson Steele in the 237th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick238 Rnd7 Hayden Hatten
They reached a country mile for Hayden Hatten at slot 238, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
