FutureB
More right than wrong for the Bengals, and a B- to prove it. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Hayden Hatten in pick 238, a good 63 spots before the room expected him. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. With interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Oladapo.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Xavier Legette
In the 29th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
Kris Jenkins in the 49th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick80
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at slot 80 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick92
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick115
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick No. 115 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick129
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A premium they did not need to pay, Ben Sinnott a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright at Round 5, Pick 15 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
Value with a capital V on Kitan Oladapo in No. 173, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 196, value and slot in agreement. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick207
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Value said wait; Dwight McGlothern in pick 207 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick238
Rnd7
Hayden Hatten
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Hatten in the 238th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254
Rnd7
Carson Steele
Carson Steele at the 254th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
