Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Bengals.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bengals did exactly that with Carson Steele in the 224th overall pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

The McGlothern value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Dorlus pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and quarterback still on the board.

For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 JC Latham
In the 18th pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick58 Rnd2 Kris Jenkins
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kris Jenkins at pick No. 58 is the proof. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick80 Rnd3 Brandon Dorlus
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Brandon Dorlus in the 80th overall pick leaves tight end and quarterback for later.
Pick88 Rnd3 Renardo Green
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Renardo Green for less than the market said. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick97 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115 Rnd4 Maason Smith
Nothing to complain about; Maason Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149 Rnd5 Mason McCormick
A tidy little value on Mason McCormick in the 149th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick194 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at pick 194 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick214 Rnd6 Michael Barrett
They reached a country mile for Michael Barrett at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219 Rnd6 Jalen Sundell
Jalen Sundell in No. 219 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224 Rnd7 Carson Steele
Carson Steele at the 224th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick237 Rnd7 Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten at pick No. 237 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Josh Proctor
They took Josh Proctor at par in slot 238, which is nothing to complain about. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
