Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Echoles: B.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Will Echoles tumbling to the Patriots in the Round 4 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

Reaching for Matthews left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Yhonzae Pierre
In the 13th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44 Rnd2 KJ Bolden
A top-tier safety at a bargain, KJ Bolden in the 44th pick, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Mike Matthews
A wild overpay on Mike Matthews in pick 75, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112 Rnd4 Will Echoles
The board fumbled Will Echoles all the way to Round 4, Pick 10, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick154 Rnd5 Bear Alexander
Circle this one: Bear Alexander at pick No. 154 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick183 Rnd6 AJ Green
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on AJ Green. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195 Rnd6 Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at slot 195 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick212 Rnd6 Sammy Omosigho
They paid sticker price for Sammy Omosigho in No. 212, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick251 Rnd7 Mark Nabou Jr.
Mark Nabou Jr. in pick No. 251 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
