Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesC+ FutureA
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Bears.

There is reaching, and then there is Ainias Smith at pick 142. The Bears jumped the board by 19 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Sanders to cover a lot of smaller sins. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick5 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Troy Fautanu
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Troy Fautanu. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick37 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders slipping to pick 37 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick69 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
No edge and no loss on Sedrick Van Pran in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick100 Rnd3 Beau Brade
A reach for Beau Brade in slot 100; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick105 Rnd4 Will Shipley
Will Shipley at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick128 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at Round 4, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick142 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
They reached into another round for Ainias Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick183 Rnd6 Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett at pick 183 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick226 Rnd7 Francisco Mauigoa
No drama and no debate, Francisco Mauigoa went about where he belonged in pick No. 226. A need, and now a little less of one.
