The needs board said one thing and the Bears did another, using slot 74 on Maason Smith while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots waited.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Smith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
