The Bears let Pierce fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+. The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Hollin Pierce, the No. 112 name on the board, sitting there at the 148th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They are betting McLaughlin proves the room right and everyone else wrong. It is not that Winston Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kaleb Johnson in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick51
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in the 51st overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick72
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
Elic Ayomanor slipping to the 72nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick79
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
They took Jared Ivey at par in pick No. 79, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
A reach on Jaylin Noel in No. 85; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick90
Rnd3
Sebastian Castro
They paid sticker price for Sebastian Castro in slot 90, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety and leaves linebacker and quarterback untouched.
Pick148
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
They will replay Hollin Pierce at Round 5, Pick 10 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick193
Rnd6
Dorian Strong
Circle this one: Dorian Strong at No. 193 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick201
Rnd6
Addison West
Addison West in the 201st overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick208
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
They left a pile of value on the table to take Seth McLaughlin this early at the Round 6 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick233
Rnd7
Alijah Huzzie
Alijah Huzzie in the 233rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick240
Rnd7
CJ West
Steal is underselling it; CJ West at pick 240 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
