Best value of the weekend goes to the Bears for James: A-. The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Javon Hargrave pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
If Gadsden II pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In slot 3 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick4
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In No. 4 they get a mismatch in the passing game. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin in pick No. 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick103
Rnd4
D.J. James
They barely believed it either: D.J. James still on the board at pick 103. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104
Rnd4
Audric Estime
They took Audric Estime at par in the 104th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick132
Rnd4
Reuben Fatheree II
They did well to land Reuben Fatheree II in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick141
Rnd5
Tyler Guyton
No edge and no loss on Tyler Guyton in slot 141; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick182
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They liked Oronde Gadsden II enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 182. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick225
Rnd7
Omar Speights
Nothing to complain about; Omar Speights went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
