Grand theft in the Round 3 slot: the Bears steal Suamataia and grade out a A-. The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
Suamataia at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Daron Payne pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Terrion Arnold and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In No. 24 they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In pick 27 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson in Round 2, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 47 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks at the 56th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick66
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in the 66th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 75 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Mahogany in pick 87. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Khyree Jackson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick120
Rnd4
Ray Davis
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Ray Davis graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick122
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Malik Washington in the 122nd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
Nothing to complain about; Ben Sinnott went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick198
Rnd6
Omar Speights
Omar Speights at slot 198 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick225
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
By-the-book stuff, Taulia Tagovailoa at No. 225 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
