The Bears won the night they stopped Cowing from sliding. Grade: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jacob Cowing got past him. The Bears do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 231. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. Every board in the league had Haynesworth lower, and that gap is the story. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In the 3rd pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick10
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter at pick No. 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
A straight-up fair deal on Ruke Orhorhoro at No. 74, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher in pick 103 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick110
Rnd4
Junior Colson
Junior Colson at the 110th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
They paid a round early for Jaheim Bell in Round 4, Pick 26, more than the board wanted. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick147
Rnd5
Sincere Haynesworth
Sincere Haynesworth at slot 147 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick188
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
No edge and no loss on Joe Milton III in slot 188; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick231
Rnd7
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in pick No. 231 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
