FutureD+
Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: F. The Bears put a flag in the ground for Jaylen Wright, 52 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. The Newton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 33rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick39
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at pick 39 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick53
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick64
Rnd2
Junior Colson
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in pick No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick65
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A reach on Cooper Beebe in pick 65; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95
Rnd3
Josh Newton
Josh Newton slipping to the 95th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick98
Rnd3
Malik Washington
They left a pile of value on the table to take Malik Washington this early at No. 98. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
They jumped the gun on James Williams, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis in slot 143 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
