Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
The Bears answered their biggest question with Williams. Grade: D.

Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A D that will need time and luck to look better.

Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The cost of the Thomas reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on linebacker, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They banked enough surplus on Hall Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In pick No. 1 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick13 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at the 44th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick68 Rnd3 Ricky Pearsall
No drama and no debate, Ricky Pearsall went about where he belonged in No. 68. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in slot 75 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick110 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Nothing to complain about; Khyree Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122 Rnd4 Michael Hall Jr.
Taking Michael Hall Jr. in the 122nd pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139 Rnd5 James Williams
A reasonable price with a little left over, James Williams in pick 139. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick146 Rnd5 Braelon Allen
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick234 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at slot 234 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
