jcord DRAFTING FOR THEBears

Draft Grade — Bears

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bears and Smith: B-. Call it larceny. Ainias Smith sat on the board until the 225th overall pick, and the Bears did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
If Smith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 1 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick4
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a red-zone target to build around at fair value. More want than need.
Pick68
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of the 68th overall pick. Interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick104
Rnd4
Graham Barton
No drama and no debate, Graham Barton went about where he belonged in the 104th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick132
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
They liked Darius Robinson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 132. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick141
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
A straight-up fair deal on Cole Bishop at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick182
Rnd6
Gerald Mincey
A reach for Gerald Mincey in slot 182; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick225
Rnd7
Ainias Smith
They barely believed it either: Ainias Smith still on the board at pick 225. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
