Watts should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Bears, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the 14th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 7 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at pick 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick45
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at the Round 2 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
They barely believed it either: Xavier Watts still on the board at No. 72. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
