Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. If Murphy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard at slot 51 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jaylen Wright
They took Jaylen Wright at par in No. 75, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
A reach for Tyler Davis in pick 111; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick120
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
They paid a round early for Theo Johnson in pick No. 120, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick123
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in the 123rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick143
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
They paid up for Grayson Murphy at the 143rd pick when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
