The Bears ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.

They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is DeJean. The veteran additions, Quentin Johnston chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
