FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Bears: B. The war room fell hard for Seth McLaughlin, and it showed at the Round 5 slot: 134 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wohler. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Nic Scourton
In pick No. 20 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Josh Conerly Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Josh Conerly Jr. at slot 33, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick59
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Jackson at pick 59, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick82
Rnd3
Ollie Gordon II
They paid sticker price for Ollie Gordon II in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick87
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Maxwell Hairston. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
By-the-book stuff, Elic Ayomanor at Round 3, Pick 26 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
A edge rusher of that caliber at the 121st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick155
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin at Round 5, Pick 17 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick204
Rnd6
Mason Taylor
A wild overpay on Mason Taylor in the 204th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick241
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
Taking Hunter Wohler in slot 241 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
