FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on Maye. The board says A-. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Bears' quarterback, full stop. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Every board in the league had Cohen lower, and that gap is the story.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Williams pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
They took Drake Maye at par in No. 3, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick17
Rnd1
Jared Verse
Jared Verse in the 17th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick34
Rnd2
Graham Barton
Graham Barton in pick 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick48
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 48th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at Round 3, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
A straight-up fair deal on Jaden Hicks at slot 103, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick110
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
They paid a round early for Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick114
Rnd4
Javion Cohen
A wild overpay on Javion Cohen in pick No. 114, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick116
Rnd4
Johnny Dixon
They liked Johnny Dixon enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 116. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick122
Rnd4
James Williams
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. James Williams in slot 122 leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
