Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
Penix Jr. is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a D-.

The Bears lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Reaching for Van Pran left real value on the table behind him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Coleman.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 1 they get a home-run threat at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In slot 9 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
Circle this one: Keon Coleman at pick No. 43 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick74 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
A reach on Sedrick Van Pran in Round 3, Pick 10; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75 Rnd3 Javon Bullard
The board had Javon Bullard higher than the 75th pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick110 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the 110th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122 Rnd4 Justin Eboigbe
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Justin Eboigbe. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick146 Rnd5 Cam Hart
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cam Hart in pick 146. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
