FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bears to a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 50 spots for Drake Nugent, and value like that does not grow back. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will answer for taking TE-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In slot 9 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Nubin. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick49
Rnd2
Ricky Pearsall
They paid a round early for Ricky Pearsall in No. 49, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick83
Rnd3
Cade Stover
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 83 on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick101
Rnd4
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving slid further than he should have, and the 101st overall pick is lovely value for the running back. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A premium they did not need to pay, Javon Foster a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 123 on James Williams with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
Pick143
Rnd5
Michael Pratt
A tidy little value on Michael Pratt in the 143rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148
Rnd5
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in slot 148 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick153
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
They left a pile of value on the table to take Drake Nugent this early at the Round 5 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
