Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Bears let Lovett fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

Lovett falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Bears indulged a want in Williams while a need in running back and linebacker stayed open.

Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In pick 4 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick29 Rnd1 Troy Franklin
In the 29th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Kamren Kinchens
Value with a capital V on Kamren Kinchens in slot 35, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75 Rnd3 Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II in the 75th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
The board had Christian Mahogany higher than No. 99, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick110 Rnd4 Max Melton
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at slot 110 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick127 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at the 127th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick129 Rnd4 James Williams
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with James Williams while clear needs at running back and linebacker sat open.
Pick146 Rnd5 Kedon Slovis
A quiet steal in pick No. 146: Kedon Slovis for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick186 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A tidy little value on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the Round 6 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick232 Rnd7 Dominic Lovett
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 12 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
