Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueD NeedB+ TradesC FutureB+
Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the 49ers.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Nathan Pickering at No. 249 is 166 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Gray to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Hit on Sedrick Van Pran and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at Round 2, Pick 2 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94 Rnd3 Max Melton
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in the 94th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick98 Rnd3 Justin Eboigbe
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Justin Eboigbe well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Javon Foster
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 125 with a little surplus value in Javon Foster. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick132 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Value with a capital V on Cedric Gray in slot 132, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176 Rnd6 Gabe Hall
Value said wait; Gabe Hall in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick209 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
A reach for Frank Gore Jr. in No. 209; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215 Rnd6 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at the 215th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick219 Rnd6 LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson in pick No. 219 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249 Rnd7 Nathan Pickering
They reached a country mile for Nathan Pickering at pick 249, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
