Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureD
A weekend the 49ers spent fighting the board, and losing. F.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Marist Liufau at Round 4, Pick 33 is 31 spots clear of where he belonged.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Hart pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

However the rest shakes out, McGlothern at that price is a win they earned. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In the 17th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick32 Rnd1 Xavier Legette
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40 Rnd2 Darius Robinson
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Robinson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick41 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They took Cooper Beebe at par in slot 41, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley in No. 50 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick63 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
A tidy little value on Payton Wilson in pick 63, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jaylen Wright
They paid sticker price for Jaylen Wright in Round 3, Pick 3, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick78 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
They liked Khyree Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 78. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick88 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A reach for Brenden Rice in the 88th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cam Hart
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Cam Hart while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick95 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in slot 95 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick96 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A reach on Maason Smith in the 96th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100 Rnd3 Ben Sinnott
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ben Sinnott this early at pick 100. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick120 Rnd4 Mason McCormick
A big swing on Mason McCormick at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick124 Rnd4 Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick131 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sione Vaki at safety with quarterback open.
Pick133 Rnd4 Marist Liufau
They reached into another round for Marist Liufau, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick176 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini in pick 176 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick178 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dwight McGlothern at the 178th overall pick is the proof. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick211 Rnd6 Andrew Raym
Andrew Raym at Round 6, Pick 36 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
