JJ DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers won the night they stopped Hadden from sliding. Grade: B-. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kamal Hadden fell into pick 205. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Kuithe has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Nate Wiggins
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick59
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick No. 59 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at the 90th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick98
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A straight-up fair deal on Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 127, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick177
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
They paid sticker price for Ajani Cornelius in the 177th overall pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick205
Rnd6
Kamal Hadden
Somehow Kamal Hadden was still sitting there in No. 205, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick213
Rnd6
Mario Williams
A reach on Mario Williams in pick 213; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
They jumped the gun on Joshua Gray, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick248
Rnd7
Brant Kuithe
They talked themselves into Brant Kuithe at the 248th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
