Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA-
The Broncos let Newton fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Broncos, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The Newton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Reaching for Wilson left real value on the table behind him. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick37
Rnd2
Bo Nix
Good price on Bo Nix in slot 37, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick73
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie in the 73rd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at Round 3, Pick 12 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick83
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. at pick No. 83 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick89
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick93
Rnd3
Cam Hart
They took Cam Hart at par in No. 93, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick94
Rnd3
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd in the 94th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
A reach on Leonard Taylor III in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick101
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
The board had cheaper options than Cedric Gray at pick 101, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick102
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in the 102nd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Johnny Wilson well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster in pick No. 105 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A premium they did not need to pay, Mohamed Kamara a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jaylin Simpson
Jaylin Simpson in No. 135 is fair value, right on his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick136
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
Justin Eboigbe in pick 136 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick145
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at No. 145 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147
Rnd5
Josh Newton
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to pick No. 147, and they scooped it up. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jordan Magee
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Magee in Round 6, Pick 28, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick207
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
