FutureA-
The Bears worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Bears, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had Orhorhoro lower, and that gap is the story. On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive.
The Bears paired the rookies with proven help, Zay Flowers leading the way.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A reach on Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 19th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick33
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 33rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick35
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at pick 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
They paid sticker price for Calen Bullock in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 11 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick110
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick118
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick No. 118 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick122
Rnd4
Javon Foster
No drama and no debate, Javon Foster went about where he belonged in slot 122. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick155
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith in No. 155 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
