Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D.

Nobody else had Phillip Webb anywhere near pick 227. The 49ers did, by 111 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They banked enough surplus on Skattebo to cover a lot of smaller sins. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Mike Green
In No. 24 they get a premier pass rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
They took T.J. Sanders at par in the 43rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick69 Rnd3 Demetrius Knight Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick 69 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75 Rnd3 Quinshon Judkins
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Quinshon Judkins for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the 87th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander at pick No. 100 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick113 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
Nice patience on Kevin Winston Jr., who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 11. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
Taking Cam Skattebo in slot 138 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147 Rnd5 Logan Brown
Logan Brown in the 147th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jeffrey Bassa
They robbed the room for Jeffrey Bassa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick227 Rnd7 Phillip Webb
A big swing on Phillip Webb at pick 227, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick249 Rnd7 Eric Gregory
They left a pile of value on the table to take Eric Gregory this early at the 249th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick252 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at No. 252 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
