Best value of the weekend goes to the Bengals for McMillan: D-. The phones were a trap the Bengals kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The McMillan pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 15th pick they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Pick18
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 18th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick49
Rnd2
Devontez Walker
A tidy little value on Devontez Walker in Round 2, Pick 17, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in pick 80 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick115
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan at slot 115 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick151
Rnd5
James Williams
They read the board right and James Williams was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick173
Rnd5
Cody Schrader
Nice patience on Cody Schrader, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 37. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick196
Rnd6
AJ Barner
AJ Barner at the 196th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick238
Rnd7
Darius Muasau
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Darius Muasau at pick 238. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick254
Rnd7
Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers in the 254th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
