FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Roderick Kearney; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 34 spots ahead at the 196th pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Nussmeier falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In pick 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58
Rnd2
Garrett Nussmeier
Circle this one: Garrett Nussmeier at Round 2, Pick 26 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick89
Rnd3
Will Lee III
Will Lee III slid further than he should have, and pick No. 89 is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick128
Rnd4
Eugene Wilson III
No edge and no loss on Eugene Wilson III in No. 128; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick136
Rnd4
Blake Miller
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Miller in the 136th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
Fair-plus on Bray Hubbard, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick141
Rnd4
Austin Romaine
Austin Romaine in slot 141 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick180
Rnd5
Jaydn Ott
Jaydn Ott at No. 180 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick196
Rnd6
Roderick Kearney
They reached a country mile for Roderick Kearney at pick 196, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
