Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Chargers.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 52 spots for Jalen McLeod, and value like that does not grow back. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

Harvey at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Shemar Stewart
In No. 22 they get a premier pass rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick55 Rnd2 Darius Alexander
A wild overpay on Darius Alexander in pick No. 55, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86 Rnd3 Deone Walker
By-the-book stuff, Deone Walker at Round 3, Pick 22 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125 Rnd4 Dorian Strong
A straight-up fair deal on Dorian Strong at the 125th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick158 Rnd5 Jalen McLeod
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jalen McLeod well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick181 Rnd6 Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson in the 181st pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick199 Rnd6 RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey in slot 199 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
A tidy little value on Jay Higgins in the 209th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick214 Rnd6 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith is a better player than pick No. 214 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick256 Rnd7 Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs in pick 256 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
