Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Panthers. Somebody in No. 114 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while Jalen Milroe, the No. 94 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They will need Monheim to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Alexander pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, safety and other spots still on the board.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In pick 8 they get a wrecking ball inside. More want than need.
Pick57
Rnd2
Jack Bech
The board had cheaper options than Jack Bech at the 57th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They paid a round early for Danny Stutsman in pick No. 74, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
A curious use of No. 111. Cornerback, safety and other spots needed the pick; an interior defensive lineman in Darius Alexander did not.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jalen Milroe
A quarterback of that caliber at pick 114 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ryan Fitzgerald
A wild overpay on Ryan Fitzgerald in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick146
Rnd5
Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at slot 146 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick163
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
They read the board right and Antwaun Powell-Ryland was the payoff at the 163rd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick230
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
Good price on Carson Vinson in the 230th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
