Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Browns found their guy under center in Ward: B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Dayon Hayes; the Browns did not wait, grabbing him 95 spots ahead at No. 216.
Cam Ward gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Longerbeam at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the 2nd pick they get the arm they will build around. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 1, with Tyler Warren worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jah Joyner
They reached a country mile for Jah Joyner at pick No. 67, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
They barely believed it either: Quinshon Judkins still on the board at pick 94. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick104
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Rylie Mills well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick179
Rnd6
Jalen McLeod
They talked themselves into Jalen McLeod at the 179th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick192
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray in pick 192 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick200
Rnd6
Fadil Diggs
A wild overpay on Fadil Diggs in the 200th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick216
Rnd6
Dayon Hayes
Dayon Hayes in No. 216 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick255
Rnd7
Robert Longerbeam
Taking Robert Longerbeam in pick No. 255 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
