mtpallas DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Felton: B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Tai Felton had no business being available in Round 5, Pick 22, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The Burnip pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at linebacker. Every board in the league had Burnip lower, and that gap is the story. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In the 11th pick they get a disruptor off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson at slot 43 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sebastian Castro
The board had cheaper options than Sebastian Castro at pick 75, and it noticed. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Jared Wilson at the 100th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
They paid sticker price for Terrance Ferguson in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick138
Rnd4
James Burnip
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went specialist with James Burnip while clear needs at linebacker sat open.
Pick147
Rnd5
Will Howard
Will Howard at pick No. 147 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160
Rnd5
Tai Felton
They barely believed it either: Tai Felton still on the board at Round 5, Pick 22. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
They did well to land Ja'Quinden Jackson in Round 7, Pick 11, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Cam Horsley
Steal is underselling it; Cam Horsley at slot 249 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Hawes a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
