Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
The Cardinals finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D.

The Cardinals looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Matthew Jones at slot 226 regardless, 45 picks early. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

That Melton pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a blindside protector at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In pick 29 they get the face of the franchise. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
A clean, defensible pick in the 35th overall pick with a little surplus value in Adonai Mitchell. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick36 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick No. 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin in slot 40 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick66 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at the 66th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A tidy little value on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 71, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick90 Rnd3 Max Melton
Max Melton is a better player than the 90th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick104 Rnd4 Maason Smith
By-the-book stuff, Maason Smith at slot 104 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick138 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in pick No. 138; it is a wash and a sensible one. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick162 Rnd5 Nelson Ceaser
A straight-up fair deal on Nelson Ceaser at No. 162, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick164 Rnd5 Layden Robinson
They went early on Layden Robinson in the 164th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick186 Rnd6 Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers in Round 6, Pick 11 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick201 Rnd6 Javontae Jean-Baptiste
They liked Javontae Jean-Baptiste enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick226 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones in the 226th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
