The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Vikings reached some 98 spots for Joshua Cephus, and value like that does not grow back.

Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

Adding Preston Smith by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
