Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers let Hurst fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Ted Hurst had no business being available in slot 127, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

Every board in the league had Dennis-Sutton lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Omar Cooper Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58 Rnd2 Dani Dennis-Sutton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dani Dennis-Sutton. It fills a real need, too.
Pick127 Rnd4 Ted Hurst
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ted Hurst in slot 127, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jakobe Thomas
Jakobe Thomas in pick 131 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick133 Rnd4 Charles Demmings
Charles Demmings at No. 133 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick138 Rnd4 Beau Stephens
They talked themselves into Beau Stephens at the 138th pick, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139 Rnd4 Eli Raridon
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Eli Raridon. The roster fit checks out.
Pick247 Rnd7 Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci at pick No. 247 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
