Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB
The Bears answered their biggest question with Maye. Grade: B+. The Bears went off the board in a big way for LaDarius Henderson, 89 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Drake Maye
No edge and no loss on Drake Maye in pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
They paid sticker price for Rome Odunze in pick No. 9, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick40
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa at the 40th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in the 67th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cade Stover
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Pick85
Rnd3
Cam Hart
By-the-book stuff, Cam Hart at Round 3, Pick 22 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Value with a capital V on Brenden Rice in Round 4, Pick 3, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
They paid a round early for Johnny Wilson in the 111th pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick123
Rnd4
Dillon Johnson
Dillon Johnson at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick143
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drake Nugent well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick155
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
Value said wait; LaDarius Henderson in the 155th overall pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
