Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: A-. The Sam Hartman selection is the head-turner. The Texans reached 91 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Phillips pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, with Christian Haynes leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick44
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in Round 2, Pick 12 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick49
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in the 49th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick54
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
A conviction pick on Cooper Beebe at slot 54 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick56
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A tidy little value on Xavier Legette in pick 56, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick61
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
Fair-plus on T.J. Tampa, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick69
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick72
Rnd3
Renardo Green
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Renardo Green. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick78
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Andru Phillips in pick 78 leaves tight end for later.
Pick85
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Calen Bullock, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick95
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo in the 95th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten slipping to slot 105 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A reach for Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick120
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime at No. 120 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
They paid a round early for Leonard Taylor III in Round 4, Pick 22, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick142
Rnd5
James Williams
James Williams in the 142nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick143
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 143 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick147
Rnd5
Isaac Guerendo
A tidy bit of business in No. 147, where Isaac Guerendo graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick148
Rnd5
McKinnley Jackson
McKinnley Jackson at the 148th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick161
Rnd5
Nelson Ceaser
Value said wait; Nelson Ceaser in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick164
Rnd5
Sam Hartman
A big swing on Sam Hartman at Round 5, Pick 28, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick166
Rnd5
Nathan Thomas
They talked themselves into Nathan Thomas at pick 166, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
