FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Saints to a C-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Saints reached some 115 spots for Nohl Williams, and value like that does not grow back.
That Noel pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback went begging.
So much rides on Emeka Egbuka that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the 20th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku in Round 2, Pick 8 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
A tidy bit of business in slot 68, where Alfred Collins graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They let Demetrius Knight Jr. come to them and pounced at pick 71. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick85
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
The board had Andrew Mukuba higher than the Round 3 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick86
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 86th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 23 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick114
Rnd4
Willie Lampkin
A real head-scratcher, Willie Lampkin in pick No. 114 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115
Rnd4
Jordan James
They went early on Jordan James in slot 115, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick118
Rnd4
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick138
Rnd4
Cody Simon
A curious use of pick 138. Quarterback needed the pick; a linebacker in Cody Simon did not.
Pick139
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Malachi Moore in the 139th pick leaves quarterback for later.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jaylin Noel
Taking Jaylin Noel in No. 147 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick164
Rnd5
Nohl Williams
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nohl Williams. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
