Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureC+
The Saints worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. Nobody else had Tyler Shough anywhere near slot 112. The Saints did, by 33 spots, and that gap is the whole story. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Will Johnson
Will Johnson slid further than he should have, and the 26th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick40
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
No edge and no loss on Jonah Savaiinaea in No. 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick45
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
By-the-book stuff, Donovan Ezeiruaku at the 45th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick51
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Colston Loveland in pick No. 51, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick71
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Value with a capital V on Tre Harris in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick93
Rnd3
David Walker
They paid up for David Walker at slot 93 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyler Shough. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick117
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at pick No. 117 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick127
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
A reach for Emery Jones Jr. in the 127th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Quincy Riley
The board had cheaper options than Quincy Riley at pick 131, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick184
Rnd6
Jarquez Hunter
No drama and no debate, Jarquez Hunter went about where he belonged in the 184th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick248
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaac TeSlaa at Round 7, Pick 32. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick254
Rnd7
Brant Kuithe
They talked themselves into Brant Kuithe at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
