The tape said wait; the Commanders did not. Patrick Payton went at No. 145, a good 65 picks before the board was ready.

That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Adding Derwin James Jr. by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
